Dental care is much more important than you may people realize! Poor dental hygiene can cause serious problems with teeth and gums?as well as lead to other serious health problems. For example, medical and dental information has shown that poor dental care can increase the risk for heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and cancer. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are important to maintain good oral health and a happy, healthy smile.

Piercings

One of the most popular fashion trends among teenagers and young adults is tongue, lip and/or cheek piercings. The metal studs used for a tongue piercing can cause extensive damage to teeth and gums. The metal ball can hit teeth hard enough to scratch and/or crack them as well cause a receding gum line from rolling the stud around the teeth. Piercing in the cheek or lip are continuously hitting against and scraping teeth, which can lead to infection from gums that are irritated and over time may lead to tooth loss. Food particles that get trapped in mouth piercing can increase the bacterium, which leads to infections, buildup on teeth and possible tooth loss.

Brushing too Hard

One of the most common myths about taking care of teeth, is if you brush harder or use a hard toothbrush, it will clean the teeth better. The reality is that using a hard toothbrush and brushing too hard can actually damage your teeth, expose nerves and cause gum damage. The best way to brush teeth is to use a soft toothbrush with gentle toothpaste and brush in small circular motions, without pushing down on the toothbrush.

Smoking

This is a no brainer. It is been medically proven that smoking is damaging to your health, stains teeth and causes gum disease. There is also an increased risk for cancer of the mouth, tongue and lips. If you have smoked for several years, it may be extremely difficult, if not impossible to remove the teeth stains. Quitting smoking may prove to be difficult, but is crucial for the health of your mouth.

Using Teeth for Anything other than Chewing

Please keep in mind is that your teeth are not pliers, scissors or bottle openers. These habits can cause teeth to fracture, crack and break off. It is important to never open packages, twist the cap off of a bottle or pull something loose with your teeth. These habits put pressure on the teeth, which can chip or crack the enamel on teeth as well as damage and scratch the gums.

Soft Drinks

For some, drinking soft drinks may seem unavoidable and most people are aware of the fact that the amount of sugar in soft drinks can cause tooth decay. However, even if you drink sugar free soda, the citric acid and phosphoric acid can lead to cavities and wear down tooth enamel. The acid content in soft drinks, coffee, tea and sports drinks is so high, that damage to the enamel begins within minutes after exposure to the acid. If you consume liquids that contain a high acid content, it is important to have regular cleanings and check-ups to prevent extensive damage and when drinking these beverages if you use a straw it helps prevent the liquid from coming in contact with tooth enamel.
