Proper Brushing and Flossing Techniques



Everyone needs be working towards having the best possible oral hygiene.? Daily brushing and flossing are essential tools to accomplish this.? The regular removal of plaque or bacteria forming in a person?s mouth is key to healthy gums and teeth.

Gum Disease

One of the most common dental problems that can be prevented by proper brushing and flossing is gum disease.? Problems with a person?s gums can develop slowly and initially not cause any pain.? If proper oral hygiene is not followed and the disease is not treated then inflammation can develop.? This will cause problems with the attachment of teeth.? It can result in tooth mobility and even tooth loss.

When to Brush and Floss

Most people experience positive results when they brush their teeth for at least two minutes in the morning and two minutes in the evening.? When a child is young, they may be told to brush their teeth after eating food or drink that has a lot of starch or sugar in it.? Prior to brushing, many experts recommend people floss their teeth.

Choosing the Right Toothbrush

When a person is trying to select the best toothbrush there are a few things they need to keep in mind.? Soft-bristled toothbrushes are often recommended by dental professionals.? They are able to safely remove plaque from the surface of a tooth.? If a person uses a hard bristled brush and is too forceful when brushing, they could damage their teeth.? Their gums could recede and tooth enamel could be damaged.? This could expose a tooth?s root surface.

Effective Brushing Technique

– Put the bristles of the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle.? The bristles need to be touching the tooth?s surface as well as the gumline.

– Carefully move the brush over the outer surface of the teeth using a back and forth motion.? The toothbrush can also be moved in a rolling motion.? After the first few teeth are brushed continue until all are finished.

– It?s important to keep the 45 degree angle of the toothbrush when brushing the backside of the teeth.? When brushing the backside of teeth many up and down strokes need to be incorporated into the brushing motion.

– Put the brush on the biting surface of the teeth.? Use a scrubbing motion to clean them.

– It?s important that the tongue also be brushed.? Move the toothbrush gently over the tongue in a back and forth motion.? This will remove bacteria that causes odor.

Effective Flossing

– Take approximately 18 inches of floss.? Put it around the middle finger of on both hands.? There should be around one to two inches of floss between them.

– The floss between the thumbs and index finger needs to be held firmly.

– Thumbs are used to direct the floss in the upper teeth.? The index fingers are utilized to guide the floss when cleaning the lower teeth.

– Carefully move the floss between teeth in a zig-zag type of motion.? Floss can be moved around the side of the tooth.

– Floss need to be moved up and down on the surface of a tooth under the gumline.? Each tooth needs to be flossed with a clean section of floss.
